Franchising Going Green?

by Michelle Rowan

It has been said if you can think of a business model, someone has already thought about it and is franchising it! Hundreds of new concepts pop up but whether that franchise will survive is really about if it's a solid opportunity with the support and interest to sustain it.

Awareness of the environment and eating organic has gained awareness as the Green Movement with consumers.  People and Businesses are trying to practice social and environmental responsibility, and of course the franchise world has taken notice and is following suit! I decided to Google "organic franchises" to see what popped up.  I found a super market concept, similar to Whole Foods. They have 1 corporate location and looking to grow through franchising. An organic coffee chain, also 1 corporate owned location.  An organic pizza chain with 3 stores opened, and 20 stores set to up soon, and a lawn care company with over 50 units. It seems to be the start of a new sector of franchising, and could be a great way to get into a business with consumers looking for more and more green alternatives. It may possibly be a fad that fades away in 5 years...

My point is you still have to do your homework. You can't get swept up in the moment of a great idea- TALK to the owner, recognize if you want to be part of the beginning of a system. You might like the idea that you can help shape the franchise system, and get in at the beginning. Or you may be looking at a franchise for the brand recognition and starting small and in a new market may scare you. Find out if your region is embracing the Green Movement and if you are ready to help build the momentum!
