A mother and her daughter, who will graduate in May from college, share ownership of a new Home Instead Senior Care franchise business, a partnership that seems tailor-made for these economic times. More college graduates are having a difficult time finding jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Teaming with a family member has proven successful. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, family-owned businesses account for 90 percent of all businesses in the U.S. (large and small) and continue to be a powerful force. And senior care franchising is one way to help new graduates get their careers off the ground.

How Important is Culture?

by John DeHart

We just hosted our ‘millionaire club members’ for two days in Las Vegas. Our millionaires club are those franchise partners who have hit at least one million dollars in sales over the past year.

On my way to the airport, early Monday morning, I was dreading this trip. I had just arrived back from holiday, I had a million things to catch up on at the office, and I don’t even like Las Vegas! On top of it all, I was off on another trip after Las Vegas, which meant even more time away from my wife and kids.

As I shuffled into the airport lounge, I saw a group of our franchise partners who had just arrived from other cities across the country. You could tell who they were; they were the energetic, boisterous group of people who were laughing; the large group who obviously enjoyed each others’ company.

And a funny thing happened. I instantly jumped up. I actually wanted to be there. As soon as I saw them, I wanted to hang out with them. The energy of the group just made you want that. It was a reminder of what the outcome of having a great culture is: you have fun with those you work with. We spent two fun filled days, full of business chat and life conversations. We all can’t wait until next year.

What this also highlighted for me was just how important it is for franchisees and franchisors to be aligned around the type of culture they want to create. It’s an element we spend a lot of time focusing on when we’re interviewing prospective partners but it’s an area I think prospective franchisees should spend just as much time thinking about.

When looking at a franchise opportunity, be sure to ask yourself the question whether you’ll enjoy the type of culture your prospective franchisor has fostered. I can tell you with years of experience, that’ll be just as important as anything else you’re looking at.
