Right People, Right Places, Right Time

by Reed Nyffeler

Managing a business requires time, energy, insight and patience (among many other things). However, putting the right people in the right place at the right time can really make your life as a business owner a whole lot easier.

Many times when you are managing a business that has service as your primary product, you are constantly working to find the right people to put in the right places. Just as you feel that you have the right person in the right place and begin to focus your attention on other items, you realize that you need to again make sure to train your managers and employees.  Making sure that they know that you care what they are doing and are concerned about their development as an employee. This can be a very daunting assignment.

A key strategy to staying on top of employee development is hiring the right people. We have developed many tools that are designed to help our franchisees vet the proper employee base that not only represents our brand in a positive light, but also has the best interests of the organization in mind as they are providing a service.

The first step is to start the process before you need the employees. This will ensure that you have the highest quality of candidates in a pool and sufficient time to make a good hiring decision. When you hire the right person, they begin to attract similar talent around them and make the overall organization a better business to manage.
After you have your key managers in place, you can give them a little authority to manage within their box by clearly laying out the expectations and allowing for them to interact with their direct reports or the clients under the parameters that were established. In order to make sure that they are learning this skill set, it is important to discuss situations and responses directly with them to make sure that they are fully trained and prepared to handle any circumstance as it comes their way.

Time invested in employees who are at the front lines of the business is time well spent. It is these employees that your clients see on a daily basis and will leave an impression in the minds of the client and the market as to what types of services that you provide. As part of our value proposition, we provide a better officer and service to our clients and need to do our job as managers to make sure that we are providing the highest level of service possible!
