A mother and her daughter, who will graduate in May from college, share ownership of a new Home Instead Senior Care franchise business, a partnership that seems tailor-made for these economic times. More college graduates are having a difficult time finding jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Teaming with a family member has proven successful. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, family-owned businesses account for 90 percent of all businesses in the U.S. (large and small) and continue to be a powerful force. And senior care franchising is one way to help new graduates get their careers off the ground.

Selecting a Franchise: Why the Day Spa Category is Worth Researching

by Thomas Scott, Showhomes

What do burgers, mops, donuts and signs have in common?

They are items most Americans associate with franchising.

Ask the average person to name some franchise companies and you’ll hear McDonalds, Service Magic, Dunkin Donuts or FastSigns – all big brands with large numbers of franchises open across the country. What they also share is membership in some of the most crowded and competitive categories of franchising: food, cleaning services and printing.

What most people don’t realize is that smaller, less prolific categories often hold the largest growth opportunities. Shifts in consumer behavior occasionally create a new need for a service that makes sense to franchise. Early on there is little competition for customers and the growth opportunity is large; the Day Spa category is one to look at.

Why? According to the International Spa Association, 1 in 4 people have been to a day spa. That’s 25 percent of adults in the country. If you go to lunch with three or four of your coworkers, at least one has been to a spa. Day spas of all types have sprung up and several franchise companies are posting good numbers.

Some are traditional day spas such as Woodhouse Day Spa that deliver full-scale services. Some are more specific, just offering massages, facials or wellness products. One company, Planet Beach Contempo Spas, has a unique, automated spa system that lets people get massages, teeth whitening, facials and other spa services from pushbutton machines in private rooms for a low monthly membership fee. Lower customer pricing means a greatly expanded potential customer base.

These companies are experiencing steeply increased customer demand: the spa industry is part of the larger wellness movement that has grown globally from a $50 billion dollar a year industry to almost a trillion dollar industry.

Day spa franchises may not be huge in number or household names like McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts...Yet.
