Want to Buy a Franchise? The Wall Street Journal Reports

by Kyle Stites

Last week, we are happy to report, the Wall Street Journal did a feature article on Franchise Business Review and franchisee satisfaction surveying. The article titled, Want to Buy a Franchise? See What Survey Says, highlights the importance of a third party report when researching franchise opportunities. The author, Richard Gibson, mentions, "Such research – typically funded by the franchise itself – may be a telling indication of how well a franchise system is working, or whether it should be avoided."

The article reinforces the importance of knowing a franchise system through the eyes and opinions of their franchisees. Though results can be positive, there are common trends in results stemming from the beginning of the franchise-buying process. "A lot of dissatisfaction in franchising comes from [franchisers] not meeting initial expectations, which are typically set during the sales process…by overly-aggressive salespeople, unfortunately," Mr. Stites says.

Gibson also reports in the article that franchisers are able to lead better operations with results from the surveys, especially if those results are dissapointing. Another important reality for those looking into buying a franchise as well.
