A mother and her daughter, who will graduate in May from college, share ownership of a new Home Instead Senior Care franchise business, a partnership that seems tailor-made for these economic times. More college graduates are having a difficult time finding jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Teaming with a family member has proven successful. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, family-owned businesses account for 90 percent of all businesses in the U.S. (large and small) and continue to be a powerful force. And senior care franchising is one way to help new graduates get their careers off the ground.

What Makes Our Most Successful Franchise Partner?

by John DeHart

We started out by thinking that a perfect home care franchise partner was someone with a very strong business background.

Then we evolved to looking for a franchise partner who had a strong business background, and had passion for what we do. Are they aligned with our purpose? Is building a home care business going to be a mission for them? Or just a regular business? Are they looking at other franchise concepts that have no relation to what we do? Like a plumbing franchise? That’s when we start asking ourselves – is this really the right business for that candidate?

We also looked at candidates who had a health care background, but were also high in business aptitude. They may not have been in business before, but they just naturally get it. They probably read business magazines, grew up in a business household, and are just plain great at marketing themselves.

We are almost 10 years old now, but only started to franchise 4 years ago. In the 4 years, with 45 locations across Canada (and a few opening up in the USA), I can tell you exactly what makes the top franchise partners successful: they are completely aligned with our purpose of making lives better. Amazing. How simple.

So now we look for the “Why” before anything else. And to be honest, if you are looking to start a business “just to start a business”, then I would tell you to re-think your decision. Do something you are passionate about. Something that resonates with your own mission in life. You will enjoy business a lot more if you follow this simple bit of advice! That’s what we tell all of our franchise candidates and we’re much stronger for it.
