Why Sales Training Should Be Like Golf

by Dave Mattson

To be successful in sales requires fundamental and lasting change achieved through continual support and ongoing reinforcement. Success in professional golf is based on the same concepts. Golf is quite different from baseball, basketball, football and other team sports in that there are no salaries--golfers get paid and advance in their careers in direct proportion to playing well in tournaments. Both professional golfers and professional salespeople have the mentality that they must perform week-in, week-out, or else they won’t make any money. Even the world’s best golfers are always looking to improve. PGA TOUR golfers regularly work with coaches to improve each aspect of their game. A given player might have a swing coach, a putting coach and a mental coach. Businesses need the same thing for sales; an ongoing relationship between coach and student that requires goal-setting, pre-shot routines and technique refinement, that results in wins.
